Yellow fever epidemic incoming correspondence, 1888.

This series contains incoming correspondence to Dr. Joseph Y. Porter pertaining to the yellow fever epidemic in Jacksonville during the summer and fall of 1888. Some of the correspondence is from the Jacksonville Auxiliary Sanitary Association which was established by the citizenry at the urging of local physicians to provide general relief and information about the epidemic. Correspondence is also from private citizens, merchants, local and out-of-state doctors, and county boards of health.

Article XV of the 1885 Constitution provided for the creation of the State Board of Health, but the Board was not created until the 1889 special session of the Legislature (1889, Ch. 3839, Laws). The session was called by Governor Francis Fleming when yellow fever reached epidemic proportions. The Board was given powers to investigate and prevent yellow fever, smallpox, and cholera.
